The Bump-outs

Keep Hot Springs Beautiful has a contract with the City of Hot Springs to manage and maintain the appearance of downtown bump-outs or what was formerly known as pods.

There are 25 downtown bump-outs, they are maintained by a group of volunteers we like to call the Bump-out Brigade. Our volunteers weed, water, plant and trim the bump-outs so they can remain beautiful throughout the seasons.

Loved by locals and tourists alike, each year the community is given the opportunity to vote for their favorite corner.

Our 2024 People’s Choice Award Winners are Steve & Deb Lias with their bump-out adjacent to Ace Hardware.

The Return of the Bump-outs:

Every bump-out in town was impacted by the Highway 385 Reconstruction Project from 2020-2025. In a collaborative effort with the City of Hot Springs and the South Dakota Department of Transportation, Keep Hot Springs Beautiful worked hard to secure the return of the bump-outs. KHSB took the lead in designing, replanting and fundraising for all the bump-outs. In addition to the existing corners, two new bump-outs were created as well as the Welcome Island. Through grant writing and fundraising drives, KHSB was able to fully fund the replanting program. It is only through the community’s continued support of this program that KHSB was able to make this happen. We remain grateful for your ongoing monetary and manpower support to help us do beautiful things. In 2024 alone, over 100 volunteers dedicated over 1,000 hours to the replanting effort. They dug holes, spread mulch, amended soil, planted 17 trees and over 1,000 new perennials throughout town.

KHSB won the 2025 Community Pride Award from the Hot Spring Chamber of Commerce in part because of our replanting successes in 2024!

If you are interested in adopted a bump-out, or in joining the bump-out support group, please:

Want to help out with the bump-outs but don’t have time to adopt one? We have two ways you can still help!

1) Join the Bump-out Support Squad. This group helps cover bump-outs when volunteers are on vacation or ill. They also help when we have install days, helping plant and mulch bump-outs.

2) Adopt a week in the Big Bats bump-out. KHSB kept this corner in house and volunteers sign up to cover it for as many weeks of the season as they’d like. Water is on site. Simply pick your week and show up to water and weed as needed during the time.
